Whether you work from home or spend several hours at a desk job Monday through Friday, chances are you routinely come in contact with a printer. Printers are notorious for causing stress and frustration. When you need them most, they let you down. And while programming printers and setting them up accurately is paramount to their success, taking care of them is also important. Here are 3 things you can do right now to prevent pesky printer problems:

  • Keep it clean by removing dust and debris. This one seems like a no-brainer, but months can easily slip by without thought to sprucing up your printer. Jams can easily be avoided by frequently removing excess dust, debris and toner. Most manufacturers provide specific instructions for how to remove unwanted particles. Take caution when spraying any kind of cleaning solution, as this could spread around particles rather than remove them.
  • Invest in a maintenance kit. If your printer didn’t come with a maintenance kit, it may be wise to purchase one. Make sure your kit is made by the same company as your printer, so parts and other tools fit. This will ensure a long and functional life for your printer.
  • Don’t let it go stale. This also seems like a no-brainer, but the chaos of everyday life can sometimes get the best of us (and that’s ok!) Just like a muscle, printers should be exercised frequently. If it’s been a few weeks since you’ve last printed, print a few pages of dummy text just to make sure everything is working properly so when the time comes to print that massive presentation you’ve worked months on (or your kid’s English paper), you know everything will go smoothly.
